Homeschool Online - Does Unschooling Fit Your Style?

When it comes to homeschooling, there are as many styles and philosophies as there are about anything else. Your homeschooling style will determine a lot of things about how your child progresses throughout his or her academic career - even at college. You should take some time to think about your own educational philosophy and why you believe as you do.

One thing you should think about is when should your child learn the lessons you want him or her to learn. This method lies at the heart of the unschooling philosophy. Unschoolers believe that education should come when it is necessary. Instead of making their children sit on chairs likes ducks in a row and reciting poems, reading books they’ll soon forget and memorizing multiplication tables, homeschoolers teach their children math and reading schools “as they go.”

In other words, in the process of daily living.

For instance, it’s time to work in the garden. We are planting petunias. There are six bags of seeds and only three holes dug. How many more holes do we need to dig now, Junior?

At the grocery store, we are shopping for baked beans. Can you help, little lady? Sure can, Mom. They’re on aisle 7. Oh, by the way, can you spell aisle?

Unschoolers see education as a lifelong 24/7 process, not a 9-to-5 occupation. Is that your style? Does that fit in with your philosophy of education? If so, you might think about unschooling.
