Homeschooling - Is It The Thorn In the Teacher’s Union Side?

If there is one word that appears to cause more controversy than most among education discussions, that word has to be “homeschooling”.   For as long as I can remember, the discussion of homeschooling has brought up a whole range of emotions both positive and negative.  But what I have never really understood until recently is why there has been such controversy with the whole concept of homeschooling.

As I have gotten a little older and, hopefully, a little wiser, my understanding of the public education system in America has become much clearer.  Unfortunately, I and many other parents don’t see the education system as an extreme positive both from an education and a cultural standpoint.  Now, don’t get me wrong - I do agree that there are terrific teachers and educators across this country with nothing but the best interest of each student at heart.  Unfortunately, it seems there are many others who don’t.

From my vantage point (currently the father of a toddler), it seems that the education system and the teacher’s union that strongly supports it are much more interested these days in promoting a liberal and socialistic agenda that promotes bigger government and anti-Christian values.   More and more, I hear stories of how students who want to write about God or alternative views to evolution are given poor grades.  Students who want to discuss capitalism are told that it is a bad economic system that is anti-poor.

When this begin to occur?  Why would our children be taught such things?  Apparently, I am not the only parent to ask such questions.  More and more parents are starting to stand up to organizations like the teacher’s  union and demand answers.

Is there an alternative to this type of educational environment?  Of course - homeschooling is one legitimite option!  Homeschooling allows parents to decide what religious and political views will be introduced to the child.  Often times, the views expressed in a homeschooling environment are opposite of those taught in the public edcuation system and, thus the major bone of contention!

Bottom line for me - in a home school environment, parents regain control from the often liberal agenda set by the teacher’s union and other political forces.  This is ultimately why homeschooling is the thorn in the teacher’s union side!
