Homeschooling Online - Arizona Establishes Unfair Rules In Chess Tournament

If you live in East Valley, Arizona and you play chess, you may be banned from participating in the state chess tournament. One team - the winner of last year’s tournament - wasn’t allowed to play this year in the Arizona Scholastic Chess Championship in Tucson, Arizona.

A new rule require homeschool teams be confined to boundaries or they can’t play in the tournament. The rule doesn’t apply to private or public schools. It has some homeschooling moms hopping mad. I can’t blame them.

Since Arizona is an open enrollment state, allowing public, private, and charter school students to attend any school they like regardless of where they live, this rule seems a bit arbitrary. Homeschool students must follow the boundary rule or they can’t play in the state tournament because, as one tournament director said, the rule prevents homeschoolers from buying and selling chess players like a sports team. My oh my, we want to encourage competition now, would we?
