Homeschooling Online - Developing A Quality Lesson Plan - Part 2

In this post, we continue our look at developing a quality lesson plan with steps 3 through 5…

Step 3
You should show, as early as possible in your lesson plan, what materials you are going to use.  These would probably be discovered later in the lesson plan; however, they should be shown early in case someone else decided to start using your lesson plan.  They would benefit by knowing in advance what materials would be required.

Be specific in this case so that you can make sure the teacher will have everything that they could possibly need.

Step 4
You may want to write out an anticipatory set as a great way to lead into the lesson plan and develop the students’ interest in learning what you are getting ready to teach. For example, when dealing with a lesson on fractions, the teacher could start by asking the students how they would divide up a pizza to make sure each of their 3 friends got an equal amount.  Once they have made an attempt to accomplish that, tell them that they can do this if they know how to work with fractions and then proceed with the lesson.

Step 5
At this point you need to write the step-by-step procedures that will be performed to reach each of the above-mentioned objectives. These don’t have to involve every little thing that the teacher will say and do, but they should list the relevant actions that the teacher needs in order to perform them. For the adding 1 + 3 lesson mentioned in the previous post, you could have procedures that read:

  1. The teacher will give each child 2 unifix cubes.

  2. The teacher will ask the kids to write down how many unifix cubes they have on paper.

  3. The students should then write a + sign below the number 2

  4. The teacher will now pass out 3 more unifix cubes to each student

  5. The students will be asked to write down how many unifix cubes they were handed

  6. They should write this number below the number 2 that they just wrote

  7. Students should now be told to draw a line under the 3

  8. Now the students need to count how many unifix cubes they have all together and write this number just below the 3

  9. Ask students how many unifix cubes they had to start with, how many they were given to add to that, and how many they had all together after the teacher gave them the 3 unifix cubes
