Homeschooling Online - How Do I Choose The Right Home School Curriculum?

Once the decision to home school your children has been made, the process of choosing how to proceed begins.  At the beginning of this process is the fundamental question of which curriculum to use and follow in the education process.  This can, at first glance, appear to be a daunting task.  However, with a little bit of research and time, the choice can be easier than you think.

Before choosing a specific curriculum, there are some questions that you need to ask yourself.  These questions relate to your willingness to participate in the education process and your child’s particular learning style.  A list of questions that you need to consider is as follows:

  • Do you want a program that requires a lot of reading or varies in delivery method?
  • How busy is your schedule and are you able to put in the time needed?
  • Do you want a program with a lot of hands-on activities or would you rather be hands-off?
  • Do you want a program that focuses completely on academics or on other things as well?
  • Do you want a homeschooling program that is run much like a traditional classroom with quizzes, tests and regular grading periods?
  • Do you want a non-religious homeschooling program?
  • Do you want a Bible-based homeschooling program?
  • Do you want your kids studying exactly what kids in traditional classrooms are studying?

Answering these questions (and many others) truthfully is crucial to your homeschooling success.   With the wide abundance of homeschooling curriculum available today, it is imperative that you find a program that matches your style and the learning style of your children.

If a Bible-centered approach is preferred in your household, there are a number of Christian based curriculum available.  One example is Sonlight Curriculum.  Providing both complete curriculum packages and individual course material, Sonlight is a Chrisitian homeschooling program that specializes in literature-based homeschooling programs.

As you go through the research process, it is important to get as much feedback from other parents and families who are already using the curriculum you are considering.  In future posts, we will look at specific homeschooling curriculum in greater detail.
