Homeschooling Online - How The Internet Has Changed The Home School Game
We live in an exciting time. What was thought impossible just a few short years ago is coming to reality today before our very eyes. From politics to education to everything in between, our world is becoming smaller and smaller due to the incredible technology available today.
Think about it. Less than 20 years ago, parents who wanted to home school their children had to rely mostly on books and curriculum developed by someone else and made available in print. The local library was one of the main places that parents and students could go for additional research and study material. Field trips mostly included local places that could easily be reached within one or two day.
Fast forward to today. The internet has dramatically changed the way homeschooling is conducted today. Yes, there are still traditional curriculum being developed and sold in books. However, more and more programs are being offered online. Students can now visit places on the other side of the world in a virtual classroom setting. With a couple clicks of a mouse, students have access to a world of research material that otherwise would never have known.
Even tradition public school education is utilizing the internet to integrate a home school approach. For example, a school system in Florida is allowing students to complete their high school public education from home. In fact, students outside of Florida are eligible to apply and participate. Bringing “homeschooling” to the public education system would have been made much more difficult without the internet.
With this technology revolution comes great responsibility. Parents must learn to utilize the internet to its fullest potential in developing lessons and teaching their children. This must be done while at the same time closely monitoring what their kids have access to and view online. Although this can be challenging at times, it is vital that we embrace these changes and maximize them for the benefit of all involved in homeschooling and beyond.
