Homeschooling Online - Learning From Failure

There is no better teacher than failure. Giving your children the chance to fail is a good way to teach them valuable lessons in life. Of course, you want to be careful that you don’t set them up for failure.

What you do is give them an activity. Set some goals and tell them your expectations. Then let them alone and see how they do. After a reasonable amount of time, check on them to see how it’s going and offer to answer any questions. If they are struggling, offer to help but don’t insist too much. Many children like to do things for themselves even at the earliest ages.

If your child gets down in the dumps because he or she doesn’t accomplish the goal on the first or second try, offer some encouragement. Don’t let them back out. Keep giving them opportunities to try and after each opportunity give a little instruction to help them learn. It will take some time but eventually your child will learn to succeed through failing. That’s when they will develop a strong sense of self worth.
