Homeschooling Online - Socialization: How Do You Develop Social Skills?
One of the criticisms public school advocates have of homeschooling is that it doesn’t build social skills. Well, you can’t argue with the truth.
If you school your child at home and don’t go out much, you could run the risk of your child not developing necessary social skills for healthy interaction with the rest of the world. But that doesn’t mean you are abandoning “socialization” altogether.
There are ways to help your children develop those social skills that all of us covet. You can get them involved in little league sports - baseball, football or soccer - or introduce them to the cub scouts. If you are churchgoer, encourage them to attend camp with the other kids every summer. They can even go on spiritual retreats. Such activities help children learn to adapt, work on a team and interact with others in a healty way.
Socialization skills can be attained in any number of ways. Sports, girl scouts and church are not, by any means, the only way. Many homeschool associations encourage networking among their members for this purpose. You can take field trips with other homeschoolers and their children. Introduce your children to volunteer work and you can even join them. After all, there are important psychological and emotional benefits to helping others, which you will benefit from yourself.
Homeschooling doesn’t mean you have to abandon socialization and heathy interaction with other people. You just have to be more creative in how you approach it.
