Homeschooling Online - The University Model

There is a new movement in homeschooling called University Model Schooling. UMS is all about building character, which is nothing new. But the UMS philosophy is more than just a philosophy about character. It’s also an academic-based training model.

UMS stands on three legs: Academics, Character, and Activities. The idea is to involve parents in a program that fosters a strong work ethic in a Christian environment. There are six UMS schools in Texas, one in Georgia, and one in South Carolina. The UMS model got its start in Arlington, Texas at the Grace Preparatory Academy.

It’s called the University Model because classes are set up just like in college. The schedule has some classes on Tuesday and Thursday and other classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. It’s a unique model for school-aged children. High school students, because they have developed self-discipline through UMSs previous training, do most of their studies at home, just like university students. UMS students typically do better at college than other students and succeed in life as well.

To add to UMSs flexibility, parents choose which classes their child takes at the school and which ones the child takes at home.

It is self-evident what Academics and Character are, but the Activities leg of the curriculum may need some explaining. UMS offers students an activity to be involved in. Whether it is student council, athletics, band, praise and worship, or another social activity, students are encouraged to participate and get the support of their parents as they do so. The curriculum is designed to build character, social values, and a good study habits so children grow up into mature, responsible, and hard-working adults.
