Homeschooling Resources - Local Church Groups Provide Support

This past year has been very interesting.  Not only did our family join a new church but my wife became very active in a local church organization called MOPS.  For those who don’t know what MOPS is, the accronym provides a good clue - “Mothers of Pre-Schoolers”.  Although not associated directly with our curch, this group has provided a great source of friends and support for my wife throughout the past year.

As I thought about this organization, its relevance to homeschooling began to become clearer.  One of the great needs of homeschooling parents is to have a support system in place.  A group of people who are going through similar issues and dealing with the same questions is a necessity for both first-time and experienced home school parents.

An organization like MOPS can provide that support for mothers.  Once a month, mothers with kids of similar ages get together for fellowship, Bible study and other activities.  It is in these meetings that friendships and support groups begin to develop.   From these meetings, smaller groups of friends are formed and soon, close friendships are developed.

If you are a homeschooling mom or dad, my recommendation is that you begin to look into local church groups for opportunities to interact and socialize with other like-minded people.  If you are not sure where to begin, use your local phone book to find a church that you can contact and then go from there.
